In recent weeks, several concerns have been raised about the direction and decisions of the Board, some of which have been misleading to many members. We want to take this opportunity to clarify the reasons behind recent changes and provide assurance that every decision has been made with the long-term health of Redwood Park in mind.
1. Membership Fee Increases (2026)
We recognise that any increase in membership fees is significant for our members. The decision to adjust fees was not taken lightly. Rising operational costs, new compliance obligations, and the need to invest in course and facility improvements mean that additional funding is essential.
Traditionally, fee changes are presented at the AGM. We accept that communication around this year’s process could have been clearer, and we are committed to improving transparency and providing members with more opportunities for input in future. Our goal is to ensure fees remain fair while securing the financial sustainability of the Club.
2. Cart and Card Fee Increases
The increases to cart and card fees followed careful benchmarking against other Auckland clubs and were designed to reduce pressure on membership fees. Without these changes, membership subscriptions would likely have needed to rise more sharply.
These adjustments help cover the costs of maintaining and improving the course. Even with the increases, Redwood Park’s overall fees remain competitive within the Auckland market.
3. General Manager Appointment and Transition
The Board remains committed to the role of General Manager, which is critical to the professional management and long-term success of the Club. Gary has contributed strongly during his time here, and while he has chosen to move on, we thank him sincerely for his service and wish him well.
The Board will ensure the Club continues to benefit from strong management and continuity during this transition.
4. Atmosphere in the Clubhouse
We acknowledge member feedback regarding the clubhouse atmosphere and will continue to focus on improving the social side of the Club. Extended opening hours, more events, and a stronger emphasis on creating a welcoming environment are already underway.
While winter is traditionally a quieter time, we expect to see a lift in patronage through the busy October–March period, supported by our healthy membership of 882 players.
5. Why These Changes Matter
The reality is that our existing fee base cannot support the scale of work needed to maintain and improve the course. Without these adjustments, we would be forced to make significant compromises to course quality and staffing levels.
With the current structure in place, we can move forward with key projects such as drainage improvements, equipment upgrades, cart path construction, and green redevelopment. These investments will directly enhance your playing experience and the value of your membership.
We are extremely proud of the high standards our greens staff have delivered. However, maintaining this quality comes at a growing cost. It’s important to remember that golf clubs are complex operations, often led by volunteers who invest substantial time and effort into governance and long-term planning. The support of our members is essential to sustain and improve the Club for everyone’s benefit.
6. Governance and Next Steps
The Board takes its responsibilities seriously and is committed to acting in the best interests of the Club. We acknowledge concerns around communication and will work harder to ensure members are kept better informed.
The upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the proper forum for open discussion, and we encourage all members to attend, share their views, and contribute to shaping Redwood Park’s future. To ensure a constructive meeting, we will invite members to table any items of General Business ahead of the AGM agenda.
In Closing
Redwood Park is a club with strong membership, a dedicated team, and an exciting future. Your continued support enables us to maintain high standards and invest in improvements that benefit all members.
On behalf of the Board,
Redwood Park Golf Club
